What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer while you browse a website or use a web application. These files contain various types of information that aim to enhance the functionality of a website (such as online shopping or personalising messages based on your preferences), collect statistical data and generally improve your browsing experience.
Types of cookies and purposes
There are different types of cookies, which are classified according to their characteristics and how they are used, as follows:
Session cookies / Persistent cookies
Session cookies are temporarily stored in your computer's memory while you visit a website (for example, to keep track of the language you have selected). Session cookies are stored for a short period of time and are deleted when you close your browser.
Persistent cookies, on the other hand, remain on your computer for a long period of time, depending on the expiry date set when the cookie is generated. These cookies allow websites to store information even during subsequent visits by the user, avoiding, for example, having to re-enter their login credentials.
First-party cookies / Third-party cookies
First-party cookies are set by the websites themselves (with the same domain as that indicated in the browser address bar) and can only be read by those websites.
Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are set by domains other than the one indicated in the browser address bar, i.e. by organisations that do not correspond to the owners of the websites. Such cookies, used, for example, to collect information for advertising and content personalisation purposes, as well as to track visits to the site, may be ‘third-party cookies’.
Technical cookies / Profiling cookies
Technical cookies are essential for the proper functioning of a website or application: without them, the site may not function properly or may prevent certain functions from working at all.
Profiling cookies are used to collect and store information about the visitor (e.g. pages visited, searches performed, etc.) in order to offer more targeted advertising messages in line with their interests.
Cookies used on websites

How to delete cookies from your computer
Cookies can be restricted or blocked by changing your browser settings. Below are instructions for removing cookies already installed on your computer for the most popular browsers.

Internet Explorer
- On the Start screen, tap or click Internet Explorer to open Internet Explorer.
- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
If you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the pointer up, and then click Settings. - Tap or click Options, and under History, tap or click Select.
- Select the Cookies check box, and then tap or click Delete.
Firefox
- Click the menu button and select Options.
- Select the Privacy panel.
- Under History settings: select Use custom settings.
- Click on ‘Show cookies’. The Cookies window will appear.
- In the Search: field, type the name of the site whose cookies you want to remove. A list of cookies related to your search will appear.
- From the list, select the cookies you want to remove and click the Remove Cookies button.
- Click the Close button to close the Cookies window.
- Click OK to close the options window.
Safari
- Select Edit | Reset Safari.
- Ensure that the following checkboxes are selected:
- Empty the cache
- Remove all cookies
- Click Reset.
- Close and restart your browser.
Chrome
- Click the Chrome menu in the browser toolbar.
- Select Settings.
- Click Show advanced settings.
- In the ‘Privacy’ section, click the Content settings button.
- In the ‘Cookies’ section, you can change the following settings related to cookies.
- Click All cookies and site data to open the Cookies and site data dialogue box.
To delete all cookies, click Remove All at the bottom of the dialogue box.
To delete a specific cookie, place your mouse pointer over the site that generated the cookie, then click the X that appears in the right-hand corner.
